The Pediatric Cardiac Inpatient Unit includes a general acute care area as well as an Intermediate Care Environment (ICE Room) for children who require closer monitoring and an advanced level of nursing care.
Parents or legal guardians are welcome at the bedside 24 hours per day; there are no scheduled visiting hours. Parents and guardians may stay through the night; however, we cannot always provide sleeping accommodations due to limited space. For more information, speak with your nurse or the charge nurse and we can connect you with a member of our Social Work team to help arrange accommodation if required.
All other visitors require permission by the parents or legal guardians of our patients. Families and visitors are required to check in at the front desk when entering the unit to identify themselves and the patient they would like to see. Children are welcome to visit until 8pm if they are with a responsible adult.
Family members or anyone with a fever, cough, runny nose, vomiting, diarrhea, or a communicable disease (like chickenpox) should not visit our unit.
For your child’s safety we prefer only two visitors at the bedside at any time; however, exceptions may be approved by a manager or charge nurse.
Hand washing is required upon entry and exit of the unit, and before and after use of the kitchen area.
The Stollery has a limited number of single rooms throughout the hospital. In the interest of providing the best and safest care to all children on the unit, single rooms are designated for patients requiring isolation precautions. Your child may be moved to different rooms throughout their stay to accommodate the isolation requirements of the unit.

A Stollery healthcare team consisting of physicians and nurses will begin working with you and your child as soon as you arrive on our unit. You will be introduced to your child’s healthcare providers and have an orientation to the unit and our general routines. You will also be given an information package including your child’s Patient ID Number (which you will need if telephoning the unit for information or an update).
Having a child in the hospital can be an overwhelming experience for patients and families. We welcome all of your questions and concerns and have a variety of support resources available to meet your needs and the needs of your child. We encourage you to speak with a member of your healthcare team, a social worker, or ask to be connected with Child Life Services or the Family Centered Care Program at the Stollery.
