4.4 million people in Canada have osteoarthritis.

This number is expected to grow to 10 million by 2040.

1 in 4

That's 1 in 4 Canadians living with osteoarthritis.

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis.
  • OA can affect any joint, but is most common in the hips, knees, spine, shoulders, feet, hands and fingers.
  • By 2040, it’s estimated that 1 in 4 Canadians—more than 10 million people—may be living with OA. This is mostly because our population is aging, and we’re not as fit as we used to be.

Osteoarthritis Management & Community-Based Model of Care

The BJH SCN is committed to continuing to improve the model of care for Albertans with osteoarthritis (OA), ensuring support and evidence-based, patient-centred care and best practices. The work spans the continuum of care from screening and prevention to self-management, community-based care and education, system supports and enhanced, multidisciplinary assessment and care, including surgical treatment.

Patient and Family OA Toolkit

Developed by the BJH SCN in partnership with the Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute, this booklet provides an introduction to osteoarthritis and information and resources to help you manage your condition. It identifies risk factors for OA and covers topics such as exercise, health eating, pain management, mental and emotional well-being and general wellness.

GLA:D (Good Life with osteoArthritis: Denmark)

This education and exercise program helps people with hip and knee osteoarthritis stay active and live well. It teaches participants how movement and exercise can help manage pain, and supports patients who experience joint pain as they start to exercise.
