Acute Care

The IPC Acute Care Resource Manual – Diseases and Conditions Table supports healthcare providers to manage the care and placement of patients with known or suspected diseases and is applicable to acute care emergency, inpatient, and ambulatory medical surgical and outpatient settings. It is organized alphabetically based on common names or conditions and/ or technical names of disease and the microorganisms that cause disease.

Each entry in the table is linked to the Routine Practices or Additional (Isolation) Precautions information sheets (below), which outline the procedures required.

Addiction & Mental Health

The following resources are intended to support frontline staff in caring for clients who require Addiction & Mental Health services. These resources are in addition to Acute Care, Community-based and Continuing Care infection prevention and control resources.

Community-Based Services

IPC Community-Based Services Resource Manual supports frontline staff in caring for clients who require health services in the community. This includes Alberta Health Services (AHS) staff and contracted partners working in community-based services such as:

  • Schools
  • Community Public Health
  • Home Care
  • Allied Health, Addictions and Mental Health
  • Emergency Medical Services

Many IPC resources in this manual are links to Continuing Care IPC resources; these specific IPC practices are identical in both settings.

The Continuing Care IPC Resource Manual Diseases and Conditions Table includes the clinical presentation, infectious substance, how it is transmitted, precautions, duration of precautions, incubation period and period of communicability for each disease and condition.

Continuing Care

The Continuing Care IPC Resource Manual Diseases and Conditions Table is organized in alphabetical order based on either the common or scientific spelling of the disease, condition or microorganism. There is a Glossary available for this resource manual.

This manual is intended to support staff in caring for residents living in Alberta Health Services (AHS) owned and contracted Continuing Care settings who have a known or suspected infectious disease or condition.

Continuing Care - includes settings in which medical, physical and social services are provided to support the needs of people living with chronic illness. The goal of the continuing care setting is to prevent deterioration of function and, when possible, improve the function of the resident or client. May also be referred to as Long Term Care, Facility Living or Supportive Living.
