Alcohol & Health Series

Information for Health Professionals

The Alcohol and Health Series is a practical resource for health professionals which:

  • helps you understand the effects of alcohol on physical, mental and emotional health and the health of your community; and
  • suggests health promoting and substance use preventing ideas for how you and your community can make healthier choices about alcohol, a legal psychoactive drug.

Alberta Health Services staff and allied health professionals have an important role in promoting health perceptions, attitudes and behaviour towards alcohol use.

Very high levels of alcohol use paired with serious alcohol harms and costs across many Alberta communities over a number of years have made harmful alcohol use a significant public health concern. Individuals, families, schools, workplaces and communities can work together to reduce the frequency of drinking and volume of alcohol consumed, while respecting individual choice on whether to drink alcohol or not.
