Ophthalmic Assistant

Ophthalmic assistants play an important role in a team of eye care providers. They provide assistance to ophthalmologists, taking down preliminary information and patient histories, and performing initial diagnostic tests.

They prepare patients for additional tests and procedures, including administering eye dilation drops and prepare patients for laser treatment.

Ophthalmic assistant certification

Duties

  • Provide assistance to ophthalmologists by testing patients’ visual acuity and eye pressure, taking patients’ history, measuring patients’ blood pressure, instilling dilation eye drops, performing other diagnostic tests as needed, and preparing patients for laser treatment
  • Perform medical device reprocessing
  • Maintain ophthalmic equipment

  • Provide education and reassurance to patients and put them at ease
  • Help patients and opthalmologists get accurate diagnoses
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene to prevent bacterial spread and eye infections
  • Prepare patients for eye tests and procedures to address or manage issues

Work Collaboratively

  • Interact directly with patients
  • Work with ophthalmologists and ther medical/healthcare staff
  • Work in various settings including hospitals and eye clinics
