Cancer patients evacuated from wildfires to call Alberta toll-free number for uninterrupted care

August 24, 2023

EDMONTON — Alberta Health Services (AHS) wants to ensure any cancer patients evacuated from the Northwest Territories are receiving the necessary cancer treatments they require.

If you are a patient who is expected for assessment or treatment for a cancer diagnosis in the Northwest Territories, please call the Alberta Cancer Centre Transition Team, toll-free, at 1-888-432-8865.

AHS will work with you to ensure your assessment and/or treatment(s) are not interrupted.

AHS, along with Alberta’s government and other provinces and territories, is working closely and collaboratively with the NWT to support evacuation efforts for impacted patients and continuing care residents.

We have placed 55 NWT residents in continuing care spaces throughout Alberta, and are preparing to support between 150 and 200 NWT home care clients. Alberta is also supporting approximately 30 obstetrical patients from NWT. Care is being provided at a number of sites in Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton.

In addition, approximately four patients requiring acute care, along with 19 NWT dialysis patients, are now receiving care at various Alberta sites.

AHS is also providing supports to reception centres currently stood up in Edmonton, High Level, Fort McMurray, Valleyview, Fox Creek, Peace River, and Grande Prairie. This includes services and supports such as Addiction and Mental Health, Home Care, Public Health, Indigenous Wellness, and Pharmacy support.

AHS continues to provide healthcare services to all NWT residents requiring care as part of the longstanding agreement between the two provinces.
