Join AHS' Be Active Online Challenge and win prizes

June 4, 2021

MEDICINE HAT – During Seniors Week, June 7-13 Alberta Health Services (AHS) has organized an online challenge designed to help participants build strength so they can avoid falling; and they might even win prizes.

AHS and a number of community partners created the Be Active Challenge to promote staying active as we age to prevent falls. Every year, an estimated 20 to 30 per cent of older Albertans fall, often with severe consequences. More than 40 per cent of falls in the senior population that lead to hospitalization, occur at home. Now more than ever, it’s important to connect with seniors as we all figure out how to stay healthy, stay fit, and stay connected a little bit differently. The good news is that falling is not a normal part of aging, and there are steps we can take to reduce the likelihood of a fall.

Adults and older adults who participate in the Challenge can try activities for a chance to win prizes, funded through a grant from the Alberta Community Injury Control Fund. Prizes include trekking poles and a Hydro Flask water bottle, a Fit Bit Inspire 2 HR, a yoga mat, yoga block, and resistance bands.

Each activity attempted equals one entry into the prize draw. The more activities people try, the higher their chances of winning a prize. There are many activities and resources for people to try, including stretching, yoga, older adult exercise, Finding Balance resources, and more.

Finding Balance is a falls-prevention campaign created by the Injury Prevention Centre at the University of Alberta, along with health care organizations and seniors groups. Finding Balance promotes staying active, challenging your balance and building strength.
