Current supply of Covishield/AstraZeneca vaccine is running low; eligible Albertans encouraged to book now

March 14, 2021

EDMONTON – More than 53,000 eligible Albertans have booked an appointment to receive the Covishield/AstraZeneca vaccine since Wednesday, meaning there are now fewer than 5,000 doses remaining.

Online appointment bookings for the Covishield/AstraZeneca vaccine will be closing at 4 p.m. today, after which time they can be booked only through HealthLink at 811.

There are Covishield/AstraZeneca appointments available throughout the province, particularly in North, Central and Southern Alberta. If you choose to receive this vaccine, you may need to travel outside your home community to receive it.

AHS encourages those currently eligible – Albertans born between 1957 and 1961 (inclusive) and First Nations, Inuit and Métis born between 1972 and 1976 (inclusive) – to book now.

Albertans born between 1957 and 1961 can book by visiting ahs.ca/covidvaccine or by calling HealthLink 811. First Nations, Inuit and Métis can book by calling HealthLink at 811.

Alberta received an initial allotment of 58,500 doses of Covishield/AstraZeneca, and more is coming.

For individuals who choose not to receive the Covishield/AstraZeneca vaccine, we anticipate being able to immunize these individuals using other vaccine products sometime in May.

More than 14,000 Albertans have now received their first immunization of Covishield/AstraZeneca and we thank them for their support of the COVID-19 vaccine program.

Covishield is the brand name of a vaccine produced by the Serum Institute of India that is the same as AstraZeneca. This vaccine was approved for use in Canada on February 26, is safe and effective, and will help prevent serious illness.

The estimated rollout plan for Pfizer and Moderna vaccines is available on the Alberta Health website. Timelines are subject to change depending on vaccine supply.
