Residents invited to take the Winter Walk Day Challenge

January 26, 2017

GRANDE PRAIRIE – Feb. 1 is Winter Walk Day in Alberta – and Alberta Health Services is encouraging Grande Prairie residents to make it a city-wide event.

Walking is great for health, the environment, reducing traffic and building community. On Winter Walk Day, Albertans are invited to put on tuques and boots, hit the fresh air and walk by themselves or with friends, colleagues or family members for at least 15 minutes.

To enter the provincial competition, visit shapeab.com or winterwalkday.ca.

Local residents can join a group walk around the Muskoseepi Park Reservoir starting at noon on the trails next to the Grande Prairie Regional College Theatre doors.

Participants are reminded to dress appropriately and be mindful of weather conditions. Keep extremities covered and warm, and wear shoes or boots that not only keep you dry but also have good grip, ankle support and a solid surface area (this means no high heels). You can also purchase ice “grippers” that slip over other footwear and provide additional traction.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
