SWAN HILLS – A newly recruited family physician is now practising medicine in Swan Hills. Dr. Islam Elawadly, a family physician with experience in internal medicine and emergency medicine, arrived in May and is now practising at Swan Hills Healthcare Centre.

Originally from Egypt, Dr. Elawadly received his medical education at the College of Medicine at Zagazig University in Zagazig, Egypt, and he completed his family medicine training at Nasser Educational Hospital and Institute in Cairo, Egypt, eight years ago. He received his membership into the Royal College of Physicians in the U.K. in 2012.

“Continuity of care and advocating for patients is really what family practice means to me,” says Dr. Elawadly. “Working with Alberta Health Services (AHS) to promote health in the community is another part of my work that I’m happy to do.”

Dr. Elawadly joins Dr. Mohamed Sfaxi at the Swan Hills Healthcare Centre.

“Dr. Elawadly is a young physician just starting his career in Canada and he’s excited to begin his journey,” says Kim Fleming, a physician resource planner in the AHS North Zone. “I see already the professional relationship he has with Dr. Sfaxi, which is important in a rural community where health professionals must rely on one another.”

Dr. Firdaus Mydeen, Associate Zone Medical Director of Area 5, says Dr. Elawadly is a fantastic addition to the community.

“He has great emergency skills and provides excellent hospital care,” says Dr. Mydeen. “He brings a lot of experience. Everyone is elated to welcome him to the team.”

Dr. Elawadly arrived in the community with his wife, son and daughter. Together, they enjoy travelling, swimming and ice skating.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
