April 8, 2014

MEDICINE HAT — The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital reopened today at 1 p.m. after a five-day closure to repair water damage.

The unit was closed Thursday following a water leak and the subsequent discovery of long-term water damage. Saturated building material was removed and reconstruction was completed Monday. The area has undergone a thorough cleaning, and has been inspected by a team including specialists from Infection Prevention and Control and Environmental Public Health.

During the closure, one infant was transferred to another health-care facility. Since the closure, 11 babies were delivered in Medicine Hat; all were cared for at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
