Doctor expected to arrive in town in 2015 and start practising in the spring

BASSANO — Physician recruitment efforts in southern Alberta continue to yield results with the recent recruitment of a new family physician for Bassano.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has recruited Dr. Ajayson Gopie, who will arrive here from South Africa in next few months. He is expected to start practising at Bassano Health Centre following a three-month clinical assessment with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

‎“I’m pleased to hear a new physician will begin practising in Bassano and would like to welcome Dr. Gopie to Alberta,” says Stephen Mandel, Minister of Health. “As a newly-recruited physician, Dr. Gopie will support the existing health care team in Bassano and help ensure Bassano residents continue to receive excellent health care.”

Dr. Gopie signed a three-year agreement to work in Bassano.

“I am thankful and delighted to begin serving the town of Bassano as soon as possible,” says Dr. Gopie, who has a Bachelor of Medicine degree from Witwatersrand (Wits) University in Johannesburg.

AHS collaborated with a local physician recruitment committee, which includes local physicians and municipal leaders, to bring Dr. Gopie to southern Alberta.

“We are excited for Dr. Gopie to join our community and look forward to his arrival,” says Mayor Tom Rose. “He is very personable and has expressed his own excitement about coming to Bassano. He will be an excellent complement to the rest of the hospital staff and he comes with excellent qualifications.”

Nearly 50 physicians have been recruited into AHS South Zone this year. Four will start their clinical assessments before the end of the year.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta.
