New Grande Prairie internal medicine specialist boosts access

January 19, 2012

GRANDE PRAIRIE — Local residents can now enjoy better access to diagnosis and treatment of chronic medical conditions with the arrival of internal medicine specialist Dr. Gerald Nikoleychuk.

Dr. Nikoleychuk moved here from Edmonton earlier this month. He joins a team of seven internists at QEII Hospital who specialize in diagnosis and management of chronic adult medical conditions.

“This is great news for Grande Prairie and area residents,” says Mel Knight, MLA for Grande Prairie-Smoky. “Having Dr. Nikoleychuk in the community will increase access to health care service in the city and his expertise will benefit many patients in the years to come.”

Dr. Nikoleychuk is a general internist with added training in surgical and obstetric medicine (which includes managing the medical complications of pregnancy). His broad range of medical specialties encompass cardiology (the heart), hematology (blood and blood diseases), neurology (the nervous system), diabetes management and critical care medicine.

“The arrival of Dr. Nikoleychuk is an exciting way to start off the new year in Grande Prairie,” says Dr. Kevin Worry, medical director of the North Zone with Alberta Health Services (AHS). “Physician recruitment remains a priority for AHS, and we continue to work hard to recruit physicians to northern Alberta to meet the needs of our communities.”

Improving access to primary care is one of the goals outlined in the 5-Year Health Action Plan, jointly developed AHS and the Government of Alberta and supported by the 5-Year Health Funding Plan.

Born in Edmonton, Dr. Nikoleychuk completed medical school at the University of Alberta and his medical residency program at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ont.

In his free time, he enjoys running and hiking, especially in the Jasper area. He and his wife,
Lisa-Marie, have moved twice in the past two years and now wish to settle down, grow roots in the community and eventually start a family.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than 3.7 million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
