RED DEER – A newly recruited family physician is now available to provide care to residents in Red Deer and area.

Dr. Gerhard Louwrens is working out of the Horizon Family Medicine in the city and will be providing hospitalist and long-term care coverage at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. Individuals needing a family doctor can call 403-342-7270 to arrange a meet-and-greet appointment.

“It’s a pleasure to announce the addition of Dr. Louwrens to Red Deer and the Central Zone medical team to help care for local residents,” says Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health and MLA for Red Deer-North. “Dr. Louwrens and his family are a welcome addition to Red Deer, and he is sure to be a great asset to our community.”

“Red Deer is the third largest city in the best province in Canada,” adds Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South. “It is good to see medical professionals coming to Red Deer to serve families and individuals in our wonderful community.”

Horizon Family Medicine now has 17 physicians serving the community.

Dr. Louwrens received his medical education at the University of Pretoria and practised in South Africa for 10 years. In his leisure time, Dr. Louwrens enjoys spending time with his family, cycling, braai (South African barbecue), camping and watching sports.

AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
