CALGARY — Alberta Health Services encourages people attending the Calgary Stampede to have fun safely.
Responsible Alcohol Use:
- Drink slowly.
- For every drink of alcohol, have one non-alcoholic drink.
- Choose alcohol-free or low-alcohol beverages.
- Eat before and while you’re drinking.
- Avoid alcohol when:
- Pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
- Breastfeeding.
- Driving a motor vehicle (e.g., car, truck, motorcycle, e-bike, scooter).
- Taking medicine or other drugs that interact with alcohol.
- You are responsible for the safety of others and/or making important decisions.
Keep cool when outdoors and protect your skin:
- Take breaks in a shady place to cool off.
- Drink lots of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated throughout the day.
- Take frequent breaks from strenuous activities.
- Stay in shady areas when possible, especially when the UV index is high.
- Wear UV protective clothing and sunglasses, such as a wide-brimmed hat and long-sleeved shirts and pants.
- Use sunscreen that helps block out UVA and UVB rays.
- Choose a water-resistant sunscreen that has a broad-spectrum sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.
- Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside and reapply after swimming, strenuous exercise or toweling off.
Be aware certain medications increase the health risks from extreme heat exposure. Find out if your medication causes you to be more sensitive to sunlight or heat stress.
