LAC LA BICHE — Fundraising efforts of the Lac La Biche Regional Health Foundation's are not only illuminating local operating rooms but are now working towards opening more doors for residents in long term care (LTC).

Foundation members are preparing for their annual fundraising event on Friday, April 19, and are eagerly anticipating another opportunity to bring the community together to boost local healthcare.

Last year, the foundation's Games Night fundraiser proved a great success in raising funds for new operating room (OR) lights at the local healthcare centre. Thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters, the foundation raised an impressive $80,000, shining the way for the procurement and installation of modern LED OR lights. These lights, scheduled to arrive and be installed later this month, are a significant upgrade from the previous fixtures.

“Though seemingly minor, replacing OR lights in the healthcare centre greatly impacts physicians and staff, enhancing their work environment, and ultimately improving the patient experience and the delivery of high-quality healthcare services,” says Lisa Sparks, site manager of the William J. Cadzow - Lac La Biche Healthcare Centre.

“The investment goes beyond merely replacing bulbs; it encompasses the entire structure of the lights, including the surgical boom and other essential components," adds Allan Sinclair, chair of the Lac La Biche Regional Health Foundation. "The transition to LED technology ensures better lighting quality, reduced heat emission and enhanced energy efficiency.”

The foundation's commitment to advancing local healthcare infrastructure doesn't end here. This year, as they gear up for their second annual fundraising event, organizers are busy rallying support for another important initiative — improving accessibility for LTC residents. Money raised at this year’s event will go towards replacing the existing patio door in the LTC unit, giving residents greater ease of access to the outdoors.

“The long term care unit has a beautiful patio and ample outdoor space, but the current door poses an accessibility challenge," says Sinclair. "By replacing it, we aim to improve the quality of life for residents, including those with mobility impairments and those in wheelchairs, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment.”

Building on the success of last year's event, the foundation team is working hard to ensure a memorable evening for attendees. Along with an exciting night of games, prizes, a 50/50 draw and a live auction, guests will also enjoy a delicious supper.

One of the most popular games of last year's event — an "Operation" challenge manned by hospital volunteers — highlights the support of local healthcare staff towards the foundation's cause. This year’s event will feature two exciting new games for guests to try.

“We’re so grateful to the Lac La Biche Foundation for their support and generosity,” says Sparks. “Their commitment to local healthcare, from illuminating our operating rooms with state-of-the-art LED lights to improving accessibility for our long term care residents, is truly remarkable. Together, we’re able to provide higher standards of care to local residents.”
