Edmonton, Calgary and Red Deer celebrate the first babies of the new year

EDMONTON – The first baby of 2024 born at an Alberta hospital is Isley Noelle Falk. Born at midnight (0000 hours) at Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton, weighing 10lbs 0oz, her mother Laura Falk is from Edmonton and is thrilled to welcome her new bundle of joy into the world.

"We weren't expecting January 1 as I was induced on December 29. It's crazy she hung on for so long. We were hoping for 123123, and we were surprised that she was born right at the stroke of midnight. Either way it's a special day," says new mother Laura Falk.

In Calgary, the New Year’s baby made her appearance at the Foothills Medical Centre at 12:25am.

Parents Chris and Marina Qiro welcomed their new daughter, Marianthi who weighed 6lbs 5 oz, after a very brief and easy labour. All are healthy and happy.

“We were at a New Year’s Eve party when my wife started feeling pain around 9pm,” says Chris. “We went to the hospital, all dressed up, and watched the fireworks at midnight from our room. A few minutes later our daughter was born – it was the best gift ever!”

About a dozen friends and family showed up for a champagne toast outside the hospital this morning to celebrate Marianthi’s arrival.

Shortly after 3 a.m. this morning, Red Deer’s New Year’s baby was born at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

Daughter Bailee is the newest addition for parents Victoria Dorie and Scott Beardy after making her entrance into the world at 3:11 a.m., weighing 7lbs and 9oz. Bailee and Victoria are both doing well.

“We weren’t sure if she would be a new years baby or not when I went into labour,” says mom Victoria. “There were others in labour around the same time so it was a bit of a surprise to be told we had the first one of the new year here.”

Bailee is the fifth child for Victoria and Scott, who has been welcomed by her older siblings, who look forward to teaching their little sister as she grows.

We wish all of the New Year’s babies and families health, happiness, and plenty of sleep.
