Immunization clinics shift to smaller, community-based sites

July 21, 2021

Alberta Health Services (AHS) will be closing the rapid flow COVID-19 immunization clinics in Edmonton and Calgary by the end of July.

Albertans will be able to be immunized at multiple locations in both cities, including public health centres, pharmacies and physician offices. Appointments are available at these locations with minimal wait times. To sign up for an immunization appointment, please visit ahs.ca/covid.

COVID-19 case numbers are significantly lower throughout the province. Demand for immunization continues; however, rapid flow clinics are no longer needed given the increasing percentage of the immunized population.

To help ensure we are utilizing staff where they are most needed and as part of COVID-19 recovery planning, staff who were supporting the EXPO Centre in Edmonton and the Calgary Telus Convention Centre will be transferring to other immunization sites, wherever possible. There are multiple immunization clinics in both cities; drop-ins and appointments are available.

This will help ensure convenient access for Albertans to COVID-19 immunization services, which will continue to be provided throughout the coming months.

Appointments for immunizations can continue to be booked through the AHS online booking tool, through Health Link at 811, as well as through local pharmacies, and at physician’s offices.

The EXPO location in Edmonton will close at 8 p.m. on July 29, 2021. The Telus Convention Centre in Calgary will close at 8 p.m. on July 30, 2021. Seamless access to immunization services will continue to be provided seven days a week in both cities.

Since opening on April 12, 2021, Public Health Staff at the EXPO Centre in Edmonton have provided Albertans with over 143,707 immunizations. Calgary Zone Public Health staff have provided over 400,000 immunizations out of the Telus Convention Centre, since the first client walked through the doors on April 5, 2021.

More than 5 million doses have been given to Albertans to date. Please do your part in helping keep our community healthy by getting your immunization as soon as possible. Please be reminded that Albertans are still required to wear a face mask at all AHS sites, including immunization clinics.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta.
