Surgical services temporarily paused at St. Paul hospital

May 20, 2021

ST. PAUL - St. Therese - St. Paul Healthcare Centre is temporarily pausing surgical services, including C-sections, as a result of a lack of anesthetist coverage during these times.

Surgical services will not be available May 20 to 22, and May 28 to June 1, due to physician vacancies and an inability to secure locum coverage. There are no previously scheduled surgeries during these times and no surgeries have been cancelled.

AHS is working to ensure local residents continue to have access to the care they need during this time. Patients requiring C-sections or surgical services during this time will be diverted to surrounding facilities to ensure they continue to have access to the services they need. These facilities include Bonnyville Healthcare Centre (66 km away), Cold Lake Healthcare Centre (118 km), or Lac La Biche William J. Cadzow Healthcare Centre (122 km).

AHS is working to ensure all expectant mothers have the support they need, including having a plan in place for where they will safely deliver their babies. Patient safety is of utmost important to AHS.

AHS apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause, and is thankful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff, and the community for their patience and understanding during this time.
