Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta have long recognized the benefits of integrating clinical and academic environments and putting research into practice. At the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute research will be the common thread to link all our activities. From basic biomedical science through population health studies to evaluating health outcomes and health services delivery, our entire infrastructure is designed to facilitate a translational, transdisciplinary approach.
Through research, the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute will contribute fundamental discoveries and develop new technologies that advance the global agenda to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease.
The Heart Institute is home to the innovative Alberta Cardiovascular and Stroke Research Centre (ABACUS), located on the lower level. ABACUS brings scientists and clinicians together in a translational research centre with cores representing the four pillars of research:
ABACUS and the Cardiovascular Translational Research Centre are two examples of over 14 major cardiovascular research groups at the University of Alberta. The heart Institute’s research strength is further bolstered by Alberta Health Services’s clinical research hospitals. Together, our research groups are pushing the frontiers of what is possible in preventing and treating heart disease.
