The Department of Anesthesia, Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone is a core clinical service providing anesthetic care at five acute care sites and a number of non-hospital surgical facilities in Calgary. Approximately 1.2 million people living in an area of 40,000 square kilometers, in addition to patients from Southern Alberta, southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern British Columbia.

Anesthesia core clinical service encompasses the provision of approximately 90,000 anesthetics per year in Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone and contracted private surgical facilities.
Additional services provided by anesthesiologists include:

• preoperative evaluation
• medical supervision and leadership of the Peri-Operative Blood Conservation Program
• obstetrical anesthesia and analgesia
• anesthesia for cardiac angiography and interventional radiology, sedation and anesthesia for painful procedures, and MRI scans for children and adults
• management of postoperative pain, and assistance with the management of chronic pain and palliative pain relief
