The Town of Hanna remains close to its history – literally. While many Alberta towns have some version of a pioneer village, Hanna has grown up alongside the original village, preserving a full block of turn-of-the century homes and businesses that sprang up at this important stop along the Calgary-Saskatoon railway line. One mark of the town’s significance to the railroad is how it was named for Canadian National Rail vice president David Blythe Hanna. The roundhouse, a roughly 20,000 square foot, masonry, brick, and timber building still stands on the edge of town; the train station itself now serves as the town’s information centre.

Residents experience an excellent quality of life, while enjoying a wide range of cultural and recreational activities Golf enthusiasts will enjoy the 9-hole golf course on days off, while residents can pick up fresh local produce at the Farmer’s Market, or even take in an old-fashioned drive-in movie with their families. Kids and adults alike enjoy the fitness centre, swimming pool, parks, and soccer fields. In the summer the baseball diamonds are quite active, especially during the annual Slo-Pitch Showdown; and in the winter, the arena is a hub of activity for hockey teams and curling bonspiels.

The town’s Information Centre is worth a visit. It is now classified as a Heritage Railway Station and historic building – get an ice-cream cone while you’re there. Local restaurants serve up Western and North American fare. Nearby, Fox Lake and Prairie Oasis Park have sandy beachfront, camping, and day use areas. Antelope Hill Provincial Park is a natural preserve that also has day use facilities, washrooms, and hiking trails.
