The North Zone Locum program offers an exciting opportunity for registered nurses (RN) and registered psychiatric nurses (RPN) to travel. Round out your career while discovering unique northern cultures. Experience working to your full scope of practice while taking in Alberta’s natural beauty!

Placements typically run approximately three weeks, however, the time frame for locums is flexible. There is no formalized minimum or maximum duration for placements. The location is negotiable across over 40 communities and 115 sites. Locum assignments are based on experience, specialization, availability and location preferences.

You will have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of practice settings such as: Acute Care, Emergency, Intensive Care, Operating Room, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Continuing Care, Home Care, Public Health and Psychiatry.

Locum nurses have a minimum of between one to two years of nursing experience, although more experience is preferred. They are familiar with nursing roles and responsibilities, standards and protocols. In this role, nurses:

• Use critical thinking and problem solving skills
• Balance many demands and conflicting priorities
• Work independently (i.e. sole charge) or within a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Assess, implement, and evaluate nursing interventions for a diverse patient population
• Contribute to client care planning and implementation
• Intervene to impact the client’s medical condition, safety and ultimate recovery

Locum nurses may receive extra incentive such as:

• Temporary premium payment of $25.00 per hour on top of regular wage
• Temporary daily payment of $50.00 for each day on assignment (excluding Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray)
• A per diem allowance of $25.40 for each day on assignment
• Reimbursement for travel costs
• Accommodation provided by the program at no cost
