What does this job look like at AHS?

Using therapeutic, educational, and preventative procedures, dental hygienists are expected to make assessments, diagnose within scope of practice, develop appropriate treatment plans, and treat oral health conditions. They also detect oral pathology to bring to the attention of the dentist. They monitor and evaluate the need for oral health programs for individual clients and targeted populations. Dental hygienists are able to recommend the use and/or purchase of equipment, materials, and supplies.

Dental hygienists are also responsible for educating clients, caregivers, and the public about oral health. In preparation for these health promotion activities, dental hygienists may be required to develop and evaluate resource materials.

Dental hygienists work in a number of different facilities including hospitals and medical centers. They may work full-time or part-time hours. Shift schedules may include a combination of day, evening and weekend shifts.

Dental hygienists should be comfortable sitting, bending, reaching, and twisting for prolonged periods. The work requires frequent repetitive motion. They may need to occasionally lift and transport supplies, displays, and equipment. At times, dental hygienists may be exposed to bio-hazardous materials, radiation, and chemical hazards. Protective equipment, such as safety glasses and masks, must to be worn. As with many professions who work with the public, dental hygienists may be exposed to physically or verbally aggressive clients and family.
