Take healthy living pledge during Canada Winter Games

February 19, 2019

Residents and visitors encouraged to be champions of their health

RED DEER – Alberta Health Services (AHS) is inviting the public to make a commitment to their health and wellness by making a healthy living pledge during the 2019 Canada Winter Games, which continues in Red Deer until March 3.

More than being physically active and eating leafy greens, healthy lifestyle habits also include taking care of your mental wellness and protecting the health you have.

Encouraging local residents and visitors alike to be champions of their health, AHS is now accepting healthy living pledges which can be made in person or submitted through social media. Pledges can be shared on Instagram; on Twitter by tagging @AHS_CentralZone and using the hashtags #AHSFitFam #CWG2019; and on the AHS Facebook page, facebook.com/pages/Alberta-Health-Services.

You can also make a pledge in person by visiting AHS’ Passion for Health booth on Feb. 21 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Celebration Plaza (5205 48 Ave.).

Taking the pledge is easy. All you need to do is commit to improving or maintaining a healthy lifestyle in one of four key areas of wellness:

  • Being active - You don’t need to be an athlete to get moving.
    • You can pledge to go for a walk after dinner, working out on your lunch break or trying a new sport or activity.
  • Eating healthy - Fuel your body and mind, on and off the field.
    • You can pledge to eat dinner as a family four nights this week, or eat a cup of leafy greens at lunch every day.
  • Minding your mental health - Get your head in the game.
    • You can pledge to meet a new neighbour, volunteer, or reach out for help if you need to talk.
  • Protecting your health - Gear up, it’s game time.
    • Pledge to always wear a helmet while sledding, walk like a penguin to avoid slips and falls on the ice, or get immunized against influenza.

Everyone who makes a pledge will be entered for a chance to win prizes from AHS and community wellness partners. Deadline for pledge submissions is March 3.
