Work Experience Requirements

Alberta Health Services (AHS) values the need of high school students, parents and educators to expand the knowledge, skills and attitudes of students about health related careers and occupations. Job exploration and practical work experience are important opportunities help to inform decisions about school-career transitions.

When and where possible, AHS makes all reasonable effort to accommodate work experience requests.

Off Campus Education Agreement

All students participating in Work Experience must be covered by a legal contract called an Off Campus Education Agreement. In most cases, AHS will work directly with High Schools to ensure the Off Campus Agreement is in place.

At a minimum, an Off-Campus Education Agreement must be signed by all parties in order to permit the work experience student access to an AHS site/facility.

To review a copy of the Agreement or initiate the Agreement process, contact Student Strategies.

The Agreement notes mandatory requirements that must be met; the educational institution must obtain from the student the following BEFORE the student comes to AHS.

Communicable Disease Assessment (CDA)

To participate in work experience at an AHS site/facility, you must first complete a CDA in accordance with AHS policy. A complete copy of your CDA form should be provided to your school.

Criminal Record Check (CRC)

Before you begin your Work Experience at AHS you will be required to complete a Criminal Record Check (CRC) and a Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS).

A CRC is a detailed criminal and police history, or a confirmation of the absence of any information, based on the personal information provided to the police agency when requesting the check.

A VSS includes a CRC plus a search of pardoned offences of a specified nature (sexual and certain other offences against the person). A VSS is required if you will be in a position of trust or authority with patients or clients of AHS.

Each police agency may have a slightly different procedure to obtain the information. Once completed the documentation should be provided to your school for assessment and filing.

Privacy Training and Confidentiality Agreement

AHS requires that ALL students complete mandatory Privacy Confidentiality Training and sign a confidentiality agreement prior to participating in Work Experience.

Confidentiality training includes watching a video and then completing an online learning module. Submit the signed confidentiality and user agreement to the Off Campus Coordinator at your school.
