Elk Point Healthcare Centre ED to resume normal hours throughout February

January 27, 2022

ELK POINT — The Elk Point Healthcare Centre emergency department (ED) will resume regular weekday hours for the month of February, beginning Tuesday.

Since May 2021, the ED had been closed Tuesdays and Thursdays due to a lack of physician coverage. Some ED closures might resume in March as the healthcare centre awaits the arrival of a new physician. The Alberta Health Services (AHS) facility currently has two physicians on site, with a third expected by April.

AHS continues to recruit for physicians across northern Alberta to meet community needs. Dedicated physician resource planners are identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work closely with various community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician attraction and retention committees.

AHS is grateful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff, and would like to thank the community for its patience and understanding during these temporary closures.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
