Pediatric Diabetes Education Centre

Provides assessment, treatment, education, and on-going follow-up for children with diabetes, including type 1, and type 2, who are from Edmonton and area, northern Alberta, northern British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories.

At diagnosis, we provide 3 half-days of intensive outpatient diabetes education to the child and family. Education covers all aspects of diabetes management. Families outside of Edmonton may need to arrange accomodations in Edmonton for these 3 days If you require assistance with securing accommodation, contact us by phone. Our program also offers:

  • continuing diabetes follow up, education and assessment, patients are seen at least twice per year for follow up
  • telephone support for children and their families, help with insulin adjustments and changes to therapy
  • education for schools via the teacher's workshop
  • education for alternate caregivers via the caregiver's workshop
  • 24-7 emergency support via telephone, for diabetes related emergencies
  • social work support as needed
  • nutrition education
  • referrals to other healthcare providers as needed
  • insulin pump therapy in cooperation with the Alberta Provincial Insulin Pump Program

Note

Drop-in clinic Thursday's from 2:30PM - 3:30PM for existing patients. No appointment necessary.

Eligibility

Up to 18 years. Any patient already 18 should be referred to the adult Endocrinology service.

Children/youth with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) WITHOUT diabetes are not eligible.
