Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit

Provides treatment for people before and after cardiovascular surgery.

The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit is a highly specialized and technical environment which provides care to patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Services include:

  • open heart surgery
  • heart transplants
  • lung transplants
  • heart-lung transplants

This is the only unit in the Edmonton Zone that care for patients requiring advanced cardiac and respiratory mechanical circulatory support.

Patients who require ventricular assist devices heart, lung, or heart-lung transplant are also cared for in the CVICU.
