Adult Psychosis Program - Addiction and Mental Health

The Adult Psychosis Program is a sub-specialty and multi-disciplinary program dedicated to providing specialized assessments and follow-up care to individuals with chronic psychotic disorders and to individuals over the age of 35 years with first episode psychosis.

Service offers:

  • evidence informed care
  • training for residents and students
  • case management
  • medication management (including injection clinic and clozapine)
  • family support and education
  • individual therapy
  • psychoeducation
  • psychosocial support
  • recovery-oriented care
  • evidence based group therapy such as CBT for psychosis group, Wellness and Recovery Group, CBT Basics Group®
  • CTO Management
  • psychiatric consultation and treatment
  • psychological assessment

Service Providers May Include
occupational therapists (OTs), psychiatrists, psychologists, registered nurses (RNs), registered psychiatric nurse (RPNs), social workers
Eligibility

Eligible:

  • adults with a moderate to severe chronic and persisting psychotic disorder needing specialized case management
  • who have been a psychiatric inpatient within the last 6 months

or

  • evidence in the community that the treatment isn't working (persistent psychotic symptoms despite and adequate trial of an antipsychotic)

Not eligible:

  • adults that don't have a primary psychotic disorder
  • primary diagnosis of bipolar disorder with psychotic features
  • IQ less than 70
Referral Needed

Referrals accepted through Access Mental Health.

Service Access

Healthcare providers should consult the Alberta Referral Directory for service referral information.

Other eligibility criteria:

  • primary legal issues or court-mandated treatment to be reviewed case by case
  • presence of other readily available, effective, appropriate treatment options (e.g. CAMHC)
  • client connected to a psychiatrist/ therapist elsewhere in the zone, and is receiving effective, appropriate treatment
  • couples therapy as primary focus of treatment
  • autism spectrum disorder as a primary diagnosis
