50 years of caring, compassion and innovation

EDMONTON – For 50 years, the Cross Cancer Institute has been redefining the future of cancer in Alberta.

Northern Alberta’s comprehensive cancer centre has been a leader in innovative cancer research, prevention, treatment and care initiatives across the province and beyond since opening its doors in September 1968.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) will celebrate this milestone by hosting and supporting a series of events throughout the year. Past and present staff, physicians, volunteers, patients and families will be invited to participate in many events, including an official celebration on July 6.

“For Alberta families facing life’s most harrowing moments, the Cross Cancer Institute has been a place of compassion, care and hope,” said Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health. “It’s impossible to think about this milestone apart from the incredible physicians, researchers, staff and volunteers who made the Cross what it is. Thanks to their work, we have a strong foundation for the future of cancer treatment in Alberta.”

“The Cross Cancer Institute’s tradition of excellence as a leading provider of cancer services is well known in our province and across Canada,” says Dr. Francois Belanger, AHS Vice President, Quality and Chief Medical Officer.

“We will celebrate the many achievements of staff, students and partners and say thank you for their dedication to serving countless patients, their families and communities. And we are celebrating these achievements with two valuable partners: the University of Alberta and the Alberta Cancer Foundation.”

The University of Alberta’s Department of Oncology is celebrating its 25th anniversary and the Alberta Cancer Foundation Cross Cancer Institute Charity Golf Tournament is recognizing its 30th year. All three organizations are working together to plan various events around Edmonton and celebrating partnerships that have helped change the face of cancer in Alberta.

The Alberta Cancer Foundation will be kicking off a special fundraising campaign in late April and the University of Alberta will begin their celebrations May 25. Details will be available online in the coming weeks.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and servicesfor more than four million adults and children living in Alberta. Its mission is to provide a quality, patient-focused health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
