Alberta Health Services wins three top employer awards

February 21, 2018

EDMONTON – Alberta Health Services (AHS) continues to garner recognition as one of the best places to work in Canada.

AHS has been included on Alberta’s Top 70 Employers list, released today. Earlier in February, AHS gained recognition as one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People and, last November, AHS was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2018.

AHS President and CEO Dr. Verna Yiu says these awards are strong endorsements of the work AHS staff, physicians and volunteers have done to create exceptional workplaces that support the delivery of high-quality care to Albertans.

“These awards capture the outcomes we’d envisioned when we implemented Our People Strategy, says Dr. Yiu, referring to AHS’ workforce safety and engagement strategy. “Through the actions and dedication of so many, we’ve been able to create a values-based workplace where people feel safe, healthy, valued and included, and able to reach their full potential.”

Evidence suggests improved employee engagement leads to improved patient care.

Founded in 1999, Canada’s Top 100 Employers project recognizes leading organizations that offer exceptional workplaces for their employees nationally, provincially and in specialty categories, such as Young People.

“I am so proud of our people for making AHS such a great place to work – one person and one interaction at a time,” says Dr. Yiu. “I am honoured to lead this great organization.”

These lists are described as a “who’s who” of employers that are leading the nation in attracting and retaining employees. Through these awards, AHS gains recognition not only as a preferred Canadian employer and top employer in our province but as a workplace that embraces the vibrancy and energy of young people. These awards are expected to help AHS attract people with sought-after skills.

AHS received top marks in many of the categories used by the editors to make their selections. AHS’ recent establishment of a diversity and inclusion council along with its efforts to facilitate work placements for new Canadians and persons with intellectual disabilities were also listed as reasons for the organization’s selection.

The AHS workforce includes more than 130,000 people working in hospitals, clinics, urgent care centres, continuing care facilities and communities across the province.

The Canada’s Top 100 Employers project includes a variety of annual events founded by MediaCorp Canada, the nation’s largest publisher of employment periodicals that reaches more than 13 million Canadians annually through a variety of magazine and newspaper partners, including the Globe and Mail.
