Critical Care Medicine - Calgary

The Department of Critical Care is made up of multidisciplinary teams including Registered Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Dieticians and 28 Intensivists. Our department includes 4 adult intensive care units located in three tertiary level hospitals. We operate a total of 63 beds, 12 of which are dedicated to post-operative cardiac surgical care. We are currently in the process of expanding to meet the demands of our growing community. Three of the four units are combined medical and surgical with an annual admission rate approaching 2,400. The fourth unit is a CVICU caring for post-operative cardiac surgery patients and currently supports a caseload of approximately 1,000 surgeries a year.

The Department is dedicated to teaching, research and continuous quality improvement. We have a full complement of residents, medical students and fellows. Our active, fully accredited fellowship program also has ties to the Trauma fellowship program. The Department supports both basic science and clinical research. We have a dedicated information system with bedside computers that track all of our patient data, an internal web site that supports ICU-specific protocols as well as a PACS digital diagnostic imaging system at all sites.
