Surgical Foundations

Different surgical specialties use Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) to varying degrees. The Surgical Foundations program allows residents from various specialties to grasp MIS fundamentals.

The program offers lectures, classroom-based instruction and live surgical simulations:

  • Classroom-based sessions allow residents to compare the use of MIS in different specialties, gain familiarity with the characteristics and functions of MIS equipment, devices and instrumentation and develop surgical psychomotor competencies in preparation for surgical simulation.
  • Surgical simulations build upon the classroom sessions by allowing residents to set up for surgery, practice psychomotor competencies in a live surgical procedure and complete the procedure in a professional manner.

The lab fidelity is enhanced by expecting adherence to lab regulations and CanMEDS competencies.   

R2-R3 General Surgery

The R2-R3 general surgery MIS program allows residents to move their MIS cognitive and psychomotor competencies from the novice level to the beginner and intermediate level. 

The program offers lectures and classroom-based instruction and live surgical simulations. The classroom-based sessions allow residents to gain familiarity with the basic to intermediate MIS lecture topics and develop surgical psychomotor competencies in preparation for surgical simulation. The surgical simulations build upon the classroom sessions by allowing residents to set up for surgery practice psychomotor competencies in a live surgical simulation. The lab fidelity is enhanced by expecting adherence to lab regulations and CanMEDS competencies.

R4-R5 General Surgery

The R4-R5 general surgery MIS program allows residents to move from their MIS cognitive and psychomotor competencies from the intermediate to the expert level. 

The program offers lectures and live surgical simulations. The lectures allow residents to gain familiarity with advanced MIS lecture topics. The surgical simulations build upon the classroom sessions by allowing residents to set up for surgery, practice psychomotor competencies in a live surgical simulation. The lab fidelity is enhanced by expecting adherence to lab regulations and CanMEDS competencies.

Obstetrics & Gynecology (O&G)

The CASES funded O&G labs support R2-R5’s. This MIS program allows residents to refine their MIS cognitive and psychomotor competencies from novice to expert level during 4 years of labs. The program offers live surgical simulations in various O&G procedures. The lab fidelity is enhanced by expecting adherence to lab regulations and CanMEDS competencies.  

Urology

The CASES funded Urology labs support R2-R5’s. This MIS program allows residents to refine their MIS cognitive and psychomotor competencies from the novice to the expert level during 4 years of labs. The program offers live surgical simulations in various urology procedures. The lab fidelity is enhanced by expecting adherence to lab regulations and CanMEDS competencies.  

Fundamental Use Surgical Energy (FUSE)

FUSE, is an educational program that comprises of interactive web-based multimedia-enhanced didactic curriculum and an online multiple choice cognitive exam. The program is being designed to certify that a successful candidate has the demonstrated cognitive fundamental to the safe use of surgical energy-based devices in the operating room, endoscopic suite and other procedural areas. Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS)

FLS is a comprehensive web-based education module that includes a hands-on skills training component and assessment tool designed to teach the physiology, fundamental cognitive, and technical skills required in basic laparoscopic surgery. FLS provides surgical residents, fellows and practicing physicians an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of laparoscopic surgery.
