Pediatric and Adolescent Complex Pain Clinic

This program offers treatment and assessment to children experiencing chronic, complex, or difficult to manage pain.

The Pediatric Complex Pain Clinic provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, accessible outpatient service for the management of complex pain experienced by children and their families, focusing on goal attainment, self-management and overall functional improvement.

Eligibility

Within Alberta Children’s Hospital catchment area ( unless otherwise approved ).

  • documented pain-related impairment as primary complaint
  • interventions and/or diagnostic tests have been completed to optimize care and rule out sinister pathology
  • pain is complex and its management needs fall outside the norm for a particular specialty after failure in basic pain management interventions, including allied health support from their primary or referring clinic
  • referring physician and family physician / NP will continue to provide care for the child and family alongside the CPC treatment team
  • family and child must be willing to be assessed by multiple disciplines, including physician, nurse, physiotherapy, psychology and following the biopsychosocial model of care

Wait Times

Please note that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic the clinic is running at a reduced capacity, as such, wait times have increased. All referrals will be triaged accordingly.

An estimated wait time will be provided at the time of appointment booking.

Clinics wait time based on the following criteria:

Level 1: Within 2 weeks by MD/RN. PT within week as needed

  • Oncology/Haematology Patientso Neuropathic pain (e.g.: CRPS, nerve injury)

Level 2: 2-4 weeks

  • Recent onset (2-4 months) chronic pain with significant impairment

Level 3: 1 month

  • Recent onset (2-4 months) chronic pain with little impairment
  • Established chronic pain, longer than 4 months
