Switchboard operators manage all incoming calls to AHS facilities. They assess and disclose information according to established guidelines, and redirect phone calls to the appropriate person or department as requested. When a call is deemed an emergency, switchboard operators are responsible for prioritizing the call and logging the appropriate emergency code (e.g., details, time, response, etc.). They are also responsible for paging staff and physicians. Occasionally, they will assist patients, staff and physicians with placing long distance calls.
Switchboard operators maintain records on relief staff and physicians (e.g., names and phone numbers).
Switchboard operators are located at hospitals in a centralized area. They may work full-time or part-time hours. Shift schedules may include a combination of day, evening and weekend shifts.
